Records set yesterday - WU

Several record high temperatures were set yesterday. In Memphis, the high yesterday was 89, breaking the record high of 88 set in 1953. In Tupelo, MS, the high was 90, breaking the record of 88 set in 1938. Also in Jonesboro, MS, the high was 91, shattering the record of 89 set in 1963. Lastly, in Jackson, TN, breaking the record of 88 set in 1953.

WFO Memphis to add Mesonet - WU

In its Winter issue of The Mid-South Chronicle, the NWS in Memphis says that, in the coming year, they will establish a Mesonet, which is a group of personal weather stations, such as the large one on Weather Underground. There are many reasons for this, including better forecasting of severe weather and winter weather, terrorism concerns (such as chemicals blowing around) and farming.

  • 4:25 AM: Clarksdale, MS: Tree down on Friars Point Road
  • 6:45 AM: Parkin, AR: Couple of trees down
  • 7:20 AM: West Memphis, AR: Power lines down on West Jefferson Ave
  • 7:30 AM: Hernando, MS: Trees down around the county
  • 7:30 AM: Senatobia, MS: Trees down around county
  • 7:40 AM: East Memphis, TN: Sign at I-240 and Walnut Grove damaged
  • 9:15 AM: near Rossville, TN: wind gust of 60 mph
  • 11:15 AM: Lexington, TN: a few limbs down across the county

There will probably be more, so stay tuned.

The SPC in Norman, OK, has issued a Tornado Watch for these counties in North Mississippi: Calhoun, Chickasaw, Itawamba, Layfayette, Lee, Monroe, and Pontotoc. It expires at 9:00 PM CDT tonight.

The record high temperature was set today in Memphis. It was 95, and it occured at 3:02 PM. The old record was 94 that was set in 1970.
